Heart Basics
The heart is a muscle that works like a pump to move blood through your body. The two upper chambers (atriums)receive and collect blood. The two lower chambers (ventricles) pump the blood to the rest of the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients.
Electrical impulses, sent from an area of the heart known as the S-A node, cause the atrium to contract and pump blood into the ventricles. As the electrical impulse moves through the heart, the heart contracts—about 60 to 100 times a minute. Each contraction represents one heartbeat.
